Softball Falls In NAIA Tournament Opener
The Brenau softball team fell 6-1 to the University of Mobile in the opening round of the 38th Annual NAIA Softball World Series in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Monday.
In the top of the first inning, the Golden Tigers threatened as Lexi Cash, Autumn Conaway and Kelsey Payne each reached base with only one out. However, the next two batters failed to drive in a run as the Rams escaped without any damage to keep the score 0-0.
The Rams then struck first as the hosts scored three runs in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead. Brenau answered in the bottom of the inning as Kelsey Payne hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Faith Grooms to cut the score to 3-1.
After a lengthy lightening delay, the Rams added three more runs to their lead in the top of the fifth. However, Mobile starter Sydney O'Conner kept the Brenau bats at bay, allowing only two hits total to help her team capture a 6-1 lead.
Brenau (28-21) next plays the University of Houston-Victoria (30-17) on Tuesday at 1 pm eastern in an elimination game. The Jaguars lost their opening round matchup 8-3 to Thomas (Ga.) University.
