Cavaliers Sweep Softball in AAC Doubleheader
The #19 Brenau softball team struggled in two losses to Montreat College in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Tuesday in Montreat, NC.
In the opening game, the host Cavaliers scored one run in the first inning and then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning for a commanding 8-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Brenau freshman Faith Grooms hit a solo home run- her sixth homer of the year- to put the Golden Tigers on the board, but the squad was unable to sustain the momentum.
The Cavaliers put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to close out the game 10-1 in five innings.
Starter Jessica Rathje lasted only one inning, allowing five runs, while Caroline Mitchell allowed four runs in three innings of relief.
In game two, Montreat started hot with runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Brenau answered in the in the top of the sixth as Tabitha Morrison scored on an error by the Cavaliers' shortstop Mikki Shelton to make the score 2-1. Sarah Peery then singled to score Grooms and Lexi Cash to give the Golden Tigers a 3-2 lead. However, the home team scored two runs in the final inning to escape with a 4-3 win.
Kaleigh Sullivan pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs to take the loss.
Brenau (20-13 overall, 9-5 AAC) continues the AAC slate with a road doubleheader against Bryan College (8-9 overall, 11-26 AAC) on Friday at 2pm.
