Softball Struggles at NFCA Leadoff Classic

The #5 Brenau softball team competed in five games at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgia this past weekend.

The Golden Tigers struggled at the tournament, going 1-4 with the lone win coming over #23 Rio Grande on Friday.

Against Rio Grande, starter Jessica Rathje threw six strong innings to lead her squad to a 4-1 victory. Rathje allowed only one run with six strikeouts to earn the win.

Shelton Kendrix and Faith Grooms each drove in a pair of runs in the victory.

In Friday's second game, Thomas (Ga.) University scored seven runs in a fourth inning to win 8-0 in five innings.

The Golden Tigers struggled on offense, as the bats could only muster four hits against the Night Hawks.

Starter Caroline Mitchell pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs in the loss.

On Saturday, Brenau lost the opening game to USC-Beaufort 5-3, and then lost two one-run games in a 4-3 loss to Georgetown (Ky.) College 4-3 and a 6-5 loss to Talledega (Ala.) College.

Faith Grooms was selected as an NFCA Leadoff Classic All-Tournament selection for her performance during the two-day event.

Brenau (11-6 overall) next hosts St. Ambrose (IA.) for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 pm in Gainesville.
