Softball Rolls Past Coastal Georgia
The Brenau softball team used two shutouts and capitalized on five errors to sweep Coastal Georgia and remain undefeated in Southern States Athletic Conference play on Friday in Brunswick.
In the first game, the Golden Tigers capitalized on a Mariner error to score the first two runs of the game. After Kelsey Payne singled to right field, the Mariner's Bri Lewis misplayed a Savannah Moore grounder to advance the runner to third. Freshman Shelton Kendrix singled to right-center to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Autumn Conaway singled up the middle to drive in Mackenzie Oliver Mullis and Kelsey Payne to increase the lead to 4-0 and secure the win.
Kathleen Daniel continued her outstanding season by shutting down the Coastal Georgia offense with a complete game performance, allowing only one hit and no runs with 10 strikeouts.
In the second game, the Brenau offense exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to win 5-0.
After five shutout innings, the Golden Tigers led off the top of the sixth with a Courtney Kenney double. Lexi Cash then singled to drive in pinch runner Chelsea Dale for the first run of the inning. Brenau added a second run when Cash scored on a wild pitch from Mariner pitcher Dawn Stewart. A second Coastal Georgia error in the inning continued the host team's misfortune as Brenau loaded the bases with only one out. Back-to-back hits from Savannah Moore and Shelton Kendrix increased the lead to 5-0 and allowed the Golden Tigers to capture their 29th win of the year.
Daniel again mowed down the Mariners as the freshman threw a complete game, no-hitter for her second win of the afternoon. The Locust Grove, Ga. native allowed no-runs and no-hits with eight strikeouts.
Brenau (29-5 overall, 8-0 SSAC) next travels to Bethel (Tenn.) University next Friday for an SSAC doubleheader.
