Softball Sweeps Montreat
The Brenau softball team hosted Montreat (NC) College for two doubleheaders over the weekend, sweeping the Cavaliers and earning four non-conference wins in Gainesville.
In the opening game, Brenau pounded out 11 hits and scored eight early runs to cruise to an 11-3 win in five innings. Elizabeth Schneider went 3-4 with two RBIs, while Mason Garland went 2-3 with 2 RBIs. Lexi Cash also drove in two runs in the victory.
Jessica Rathje pitched four shutout innings to pick up the win, while Megan Wolinsky earned her first save of the year.
In game two on Friday, the Cavaliers took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Brenau responded with one run in the bottom of the inning to send the game into extra innings. After Montreat took a two run lead in the top of the eight, the Golden Tigers rallied with four runs to win 6-4.
Taylor Causey (1-0) pitched seven innings, allowing only two earned runs while striking out four to earn the victory.
On Saturday, the Brenau bats came alive as the Golden Tigers overwhelmed the Cavaliers 11-1 and 9-1.
Kelsey Payne led the charge in Saturday's game one, going 2-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Schneider went 4-4 with an RBI. Landon Farrow also added two RBIs to the win.
Gracie Dorr (2-1) pitched a strong game, throwing five innings and only one run.
In Saturdays game two, the Golden Tigers continued their offensive onslaught with a 9-1 victory.
Schneider continued her strong series with a home run and two RBIs, while Sarah Peery added three RBIs.
Rathje again shut down the Cavaliers with five innings of work, allowing only one earned run.
Brenau (10-2 overall) next hosts Truett-McConnell (Ga.) College on Monday for a 2 pm doubleheader.
