Softball Splits on Day One of Grizzly Classic
On day one of the Grizzly Softball Classic, hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College, the Brenau softball team won their opening game against West Virginia Tech 13-8, but lost to host Georgia Gwinnett 1-0 on Saturday in Lawrenceville.
Against, West Virginia Tech, both offenses pounded out runs early as the Golden Bears took a 6-4 lead through four innings. In the fifth inning, the Golden Tigers slugged eight runs to take a commanding 12-6 lead.
Kelsey Payne started the onslaught with a home run, and then a series of errors by West Virginia Tech and timely hits from the Golden Tigers helped give Brenau their fifth win of the year.
Courtney Kenney went 1-1 with three RBIs, while Cheyenne Marsh went 2-3 with two RBIs. Savannah Moore also added two hits in the win.
Megan Wolinsky (2-0) pitched two innings in relief, allowing one earned run, to capture the win.
In the second game, Jessica Rathje pitched a strong outing, but the Golden Tiger offense was unable to generate any runs in a 1-0 loss to host (21) Georgia Gwinnett.
Rathje threw a complete game two-hitter, allowing only one run in the loss.
In the bottom of the fourth, Georgia Gwinnett slapped a single up the middle to score the winning run of the game.
The Golden Tigers outhit the Grizzlies 7-3, but could not get on the scoreboard in the loss.
Brenau (5-1 overall) will play both teams again on Sunday, starting with West Virginia Tech at 11 am, followed by Georgia Gwinnett at 4 pm.
