Softball Rebounds With Wins Over Bethel
The Brenau softball team rebounded with two wins against Bethel (Tenn.) on Saturday as the Golden Tigers won 10-2 and 6-5 in eleven innings in Mackenzie, Tennessee.
After getting down 3-0, Cheyenne Marsh led off the third inning with a home run to start the scoring. Savannah Moore then doubled to deep right center to score Mackenzie Oliver and Elizabeth Schneider to tie up the score 3-3. Madison Lacy scored on a Katie Cole fly-out to give the Golden Tigers a 4-3 lead.
Brenau added two runs in the fifth as Victoria Fontana singled to shallow center to score both Schneider and Lauren Sanders. The Golden Tigers continued their offensive surge in the sixth as Cole blasted a grand slam to put the game away.
Cole led the Golden Tigers with five RBIs. Fontana went 2-4 with 2 RBIs, while Moore added two RBIs.
Jenny Willis pitched a complete game to earn the win. The senior allowed 12 hits and five runs while striking out two.
In game two, the Golden Tigers scored in the top of the first as Cole's groundout scored Marsh to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
After a Landon Farrow sac bunt advanced Andrea Bentley to second, Marsh singled to right to drive in the second run of the game.
The Wildcats rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Golden Tigers responded in the top of the seventh with three runs of their own.
Lacy doubled in Sanders and Mason Garland, while Sarah Peery grounded out to score Lacy to give Brenau a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Bethel evened the score with an unearned run off an infield error to send the game into extra innings.
In extra innings, neither team could take advantage until the top of the 11th inning when Willis hit a sacrifice fly to score Marsh for a 6-5 lead and capture the win.
Bentley added two hits, while Lacy added two RBIs to lead the Golden Tigers.
Willis (9-2) pitched five innings in relief to earn her second win of the afternoon.
Brenau (23-11, 7-7 SSAC) next hosts non-conference Montreat (N.C.) College in a 3 pm doubleheader on Tuesday in Gainesville.
