#23 Softball Earns First Two SSAC Wins
In the opening two games of the SSAC schedule, the Brenau softball team held off Coastal Georgia 13-10 and 3-1 in Brunswick on Friday.
In game one, the Golden Tigers wasted no time getting on the board as the offense scored four runs in the top of the first inning behind a solo homer from freshman Kelsey Payne and a two-run blast from fellow freshman Savannah Moore. After adding another run in the top of the second, Brenau put four more runs up in the top of fourth inning, but the Mariners answered with three runs of their own to make the score 9-5.
Brenau added one more run in the top of the sixth, but Coastal Georgia scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 10-8. However a three-run homer by Elizabeth Schneider in the top of the seventh helped secure the seventh win of the season for the Golden Tigers.
Moore and Payne each went 2-4 with home runs for the Golden Tigers, while Mackenzie Oliver added two hits and two runs scored. Madison Lacy added three hits, while Victoria Fontana and Cheyenne Marsh each added a hit.
Madison Gossett (5-1) captured the win for the Golden Tigers. The Trenton, Ga. freshman pitched 3 2/3 innings while allowing only one earned run. Junior Taylor Causey worked the final 3 1/3 innings to earn the save.
In game two, the Brenau bats started early as Schneider continued her torrid offensive run with a first inning homer. Moore also hit her second home run of the afternoon-a solo shot in the second- while Marsh drove in a run to give the Golden Tigers an early 3-0 lead.
After Coastal Georgia scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, the Mariner bats stayed quiet until the seventh inning when the home team loaded the bases with one out. Gossett entered in relief to strike out the first batter and then force a deep fly out to earn the save.
Senior Jenny Willis (2-0) pitched 6 1/3 innings while allowing only one run to earn the win,
Moore and Schneider each went 2-3, while Sarah Peery added a run scored.
Brenau (8-1, 2-0 SSAC) next travels to Mt. Vernon, Ga. to play Brewton Parker College in a doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 pm.
