Softball Slips In Opening Round of SSAC Tournament

In the opening round of the 2014 SSAC Softball Tournament, the #21 Brenau softball team lost a heartbreaker to #15 Belhaven (Miss.) University 4-3 on Thursday.

Belhaven took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but a homer from Andrea Bentley capped a three-run fifth inning which gave the Golden Tigers a 3-1 lead.

After holding the Belhaven offense in check through six innings, senior Jenny Shepherd loaded the bases and allowed two-run hit to give the Blazers a 4-3 lead. The Golden Tigers were unable to generate any runs in the bottom of the inning to ensure the loss.

Shepherd (21-4) pitched all seven innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out six.

The Golden Tigers offense struggled to generate only four hits. Bentley led the way with a 1-3 effort, while Allison Gunn, Liz Schneider and Katie Cole each added hits.

Brenau (33-12, SSAC 18-10) advances to the loser's bracket where they will face Southern Wesleyan (SC) University at 11 am eastern on Friday.
