#21 Softball Advances In SSAC Tournament
The #21 Brenau softball team used a big fourth inning to come from behind to defeat Southern Wesleyan (SC) 7-6 to advance in the SSAC softball tournament.
Southern Wesleyan put their first run on the board in the first inning as Lizzie Fela hit a sacrifice fly to score Savannah Carpenter to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Brenau answered in the bottom of the first as Jenny Shepherd scored on a Jenn Jacoby wild pitch to even the score. The Golden Tigers added another run on an Andrea Bentley sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.
In the top of the third inning, the Warriors rallied as Callie Wayne doubled to left to score Fela. Jacoby also added an RBI single as Southern Wesleyan regained the lead 3-2.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Warriors added three more runs when Ashleigh Wilbur singled home the fourth Warrior run and Fela and Wayne scored on an Andrea Bentley error to increase their lead to 6-2.
The Golden Tigers answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Shepherd was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to start the rally. Katie Bolin followed up with a walk to score Mackenzie Oliver. Liz Schneider hit a long fly ball that was misplayed to score Allison Gunn for the third run of the inning, while Katie Cole singled home Shepherd to tie the score 6-6.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Brenau took the lead in the bottom of sixth as Cole singled home Bolin to give the Golden Tigers a 7-6 victory.
Schneider went 3-3 with an RBI, while Cole also went 3-3 with two RBIs. Gunn also added two hits on the afternoon.
Jenny Shepherd pitched 5 2/3 innings to capture her 22nd win of the season. The senior allowed 13 hits and three runs while striking out six.
Brenau advances to play University of Mobile (Ala.) today at 4 pm eastern.
