Bats Propel Softball Past SWU
The #22 Brenau softball team swept Southern Wesleyan (SC) University 7-3 and 10-1 to keep hold of second place in the SSAC.
In the first inning of game one, Liz Schneider singled home Victoria Fontana to give the Golden Tigers a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Cheyenne Marsh coaxed a walk from the Warriors' starter Jenn Jacoby, then sophomore Andrea Bentley crushed a two-run blast over the center field fence for her second home run of the season.
Katie Bolin hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth that scored Landon Farrow to increase the Golden Tiger lead to 4-0.
Brenau added more runs in top of the sixth as Jenny Shepherd singled home Bolin to make the score 5-0, while Marsh drove in two more with a single to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Shepherd pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run to capture her 20th win of the season.
In game two, the bats continued to stay hot as the Golden Tigers scored 10 runs on 10 hits to sweep the doubleheader.
Brenau wasted no time as the Golden Tigers scored four runs in the top of the first inning. After a Victoria Fontana leadoff double, Schneider singled to drive in the first run of the game. Shepherd then crushed her seventh homer of the year to increase the lead to 3-0. Mackenzie Oliver then walked with the bases loaded to make the score 4-0.
In the second inning, doubles from Shepherd and Cole added to the score as the Golden Tigers took a 7-0 lead.
The Warriors added one run in the bottom of the second, but the Golden Tigers answered in the fourth inning as Cole continued to swing a hot bat. The junior mashed a three-run home run in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 10-1 and close out the game.
Jenny Willis pitched five strong innings, allowing only one run to secure the win.
Brenau (32-11, 17-10 SSAC) faces College of Coastal Georgia on Monday at 1 pm to close out the regular season.
