Softball Splits With Southern Wesleyan
The #19 Brenau softball team split a pair of SSAC games with Southern Wesleyan (SC) University on Tuesday as the Golden Tigers won game one 3-1 but fell 9-7 in the finale.
In game one, the Golden Tigers fell behind early as Warriors notched one run in the top of the third inning. However, Brenau responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs as Jenny Shepherd and Katie Cole each drove in a run to take a 2-1 lead.
Shepherd added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as the senior blasted her fourth home run of the season to stretch the lead to 3-1.
The senior from Martinez, Ga. also pitched four innings to capture her eleventh win of the season. Katie Cole added three shutout innings to close out the game.
In game two, the Warriors again started fast, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. However, the Golden Tigers once again answered with five runs of their own to take a 5-4 lead. Brenau added a sixth run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Southern Wesleyan added four more runs in the top of the sixth and one more in the top of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead. The Golden Tigers added one in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to rally for the win.
Shepherd added to her strong day batting 4-5 and Caitlyn Glenn went 1-4 with two RBIs. Sophomore Liz Schneider went 2-4 with an RBI while fellow sophomore Cheyenne Marsh also went 2-4 with 2 RBIs.
Jenny Willis pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs to take the loss. Katie Cole added 2 2/3 inning of relief, allowing four runs while striking out one.
Brenau (19-3, 4-1 SSAC) continue SSAC play on Friday as the Golden Tigers play host to the #6 ranked Auburn University-Montgomery Warhawks at 4 pm.
