Softball Splits Two With Barons
In two extra-inning games, the Brenau Golden Tigers softball team split with Brewton Parker (Ga.) College to open Southern States Athletic Conference play on Friday.
Game one was a tight contest from the start as the Golden Tigers scraped out one run in the second inning to take an early lead, however the Barons tied up the score in the bottom of the sixth to push the game into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Brenau managed to take another lead, only to be matched in the bottom of the inning. In the eleventh, Brenau seized control again, scoring one run to take a 4-3 lead, but Jenny Shepherd allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the loss 4-3.
Shepherd worked ten innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out eight batters.
Liz Schneider and Caitlyn Glenn each had three hits, while Victoria Fontana and Katie Bolin each added an RBI.
In game two, the Barons struck first, scoring one run in the second to take an early 1-0 lead. Brenau answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, but Brewton Parker answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. After trading runs in the sixth inning, senior Katie Bolin hit a clutch solo home run to tie the game 4-4 to send the game into extra innings. With momentum on their side, the Golden Tigers scored one run in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 victory.
Bolin went 1-3 with an RBI, while Liz Schneider added two hits and two RBIs. Landon Farrow and Jenny Shepherd each added an RBI to the win.
Jenny Willis pitched five innings, while allowing three runs and earning four strikeouts. Shepherd pitched four innings in relief to earn her ninth win of the season.
Brenau (16-2, 1-1 SSAC) continues their South Georgia road trip on Saturday at 1:00 with an SSAC doubleheader versus College of Coastal Georgia.
