Softball Adds Speedster
The Golden Tiger softball team continued its transformation from a power-based team to a speed-based team with the signing of Mackenzie Oliver to the 2013-2014 squad.
A native of Martin, Ga. and a four-year letter winner at Franklin County High School, Oliver finished her high school career with 162 stolen bases, which places her 2nd all-time in Georgia softball history.
"Mackenzie is the type of player we have been looking for to place at the top of our lineup," said head coach Devon Thomas. "She runs really well and is an outstanding base runner".
In addition to her stolen base record, Oliver was selected as an 8-AAA 1st team all-region selection from 2009-2012, an all-state selection in 2010 and a Georgia's Elite 80 selection in 2011. A career .405 hitter, she also received a Silver Slugger award in 2011 for batting average and was named her high school team's Offensive Player of the Year in 2012.
In addition to her speed, Coach Thomas reiterated her ability to hit saying that Mackenzie has "excellent bat speed and will get on base and set the table for the middle of our lineup".
When asked about her decision to commit to Brenau, Oliver said that she was impressed with what Brenau could offer her both on and off the field. "My goal has always been to play at a school that could compete for championships," noted Oliver. "Brenau allows me to be part of that experience while obtaining a high level educational experience".
Oliver is the fifth signee of the offseason for the Golden Tigers softball team.
