The Brenau Golden Tigers softball team swept conference rival Truett-McConnell College on Senior Night last Thursday - winning 9-8 and 7-2.
In game one, Truett-McConnell scored a run in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead. However, Brenau battled back in the bottom of the second tying the game at 2-2. The Golden Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring four runs, but watched the Bears take an 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. The Golden Tigers would not be denied as they scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the win.
Seniors Sally Duggan (Huntsville, Ala.) and Tiffany Schandera (Columbus, Ga.) each went 1-3 with a home run and 3 RBIs to lead the Brenau offensive charge. Jenny Shepherd went 3-3 with an RBI, while senior Taylor Kelley (Toccoa, Ga.) added another RBI. Shepherd pitched seven innings to take the win. The junior from Martinez, Ga. allowed five earned runs on five hits and struck out ten.
Coach Devon Thomas spoke about the close game saying, "Truett-McConnell swung the bats well and we had to match them to pull out the win. Home runs by Duggan and Schandera were huge on Senior Night to take the win".
In the second game, the Golden Tigers used strong pitching and good fundamentals to sweep the Bears. Two RBIs from Kelly led the way for Brenau, while Taylor Schrader (Henegar, Ala.), Liz Schneider (Smyrna, Ga.), Andrea Bentley (Augusta, Ga.) and Shepherd each added an RBI. Katie Cole (Tupelo. Miss.) also added a solo home run. Anna Maness (Seagrove, N.C.) pitched seven strong innings to capture her 18th win of the season.
"Game two was also a tough contest," said Coach Thomas. "We got timely hits and played the fundamentals to pull the sweep on senior night. I am very proud of our persistence and effort".
