Tigers Get Burned by Flames on the Road
In a battle of nationally ranked programs, the Brenau Golden Tigers softball team dropped a pair of games to Lee University, losing 8-1 and 9-1.
In game 1, senior Taylor Kelly (Toccoa, Ga.) drove in a run in the top of the 2nd inning to give Brenau an early lead, but in the bottom half of the inning, the Flames exploded for eight runs to take control of the game.
"We did not hit the ball well in the game. We were not aggressive enough at the plate and did not control tempo," said Coach Devon Thomas. "They had a huge inning in the 2nd and scored all eight of their runs. We cannot give a good team any openings."
Senior Tiffany Schandera (Columbus, Ga.) led the Golden Tigers in hitting, going 3-4 in the game.
Jenny Shepherd (Martinez, Ga.) took the loss, allowing four runs in four innings pitched. Taylor Causey (Covington, Ga.) pitched one inning in relief, giving up three runs in her appearance.
In game 2, the Golden Tigers took an early 2nd inning lead on a Caitlyn Glenn (Watkinsville, Ga.) RBI. However, Lee scored nine unanswered runs to finish the game.
Coach Devon Thomas said, "We hit the ball better but just could not string together hits consistently".
Fellow senior Anna Maness (Seagrove, NC) pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out five.
Schandera and Shepherd each got one hit in game 2. Katie Bolin (Danielsville, Ga.) and Cheyenne Marsh (Richmond Hill, Ga.) also added hits for the Golden Tigers.
Brenau picks up their schedule on Monday with a non-conference home game versus Montreat College, NC. First pitch is at 6:00 pm.
