Softball Splits SSAC Doubleheader with SWU
The Brenau Golden Tigers softball team split a doubleheader with conference foe Southern Wesleyan University, dropping the first game 5-1 and winning the second 8-0.
In game one, the first three innings were tight ones with neither team capitalizing on offense. In the 4th inning, Southern Wesleyan scored three runs in the top of the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Brenau responded with a Lydia Gerrin (Mt. Airy, Ga.) RBI, but the Golden Tigers were unable to cut the lead further. The Warriors scored two more insurance runs in the top of the 7th to take a commanding lead, and ultimately the win.
Brenau and Southern Wesleyan both had five hits on the day but the Golden Tigers stranded six base runners and failed to capitalize on their opportunities.
Anna Maness took the loss for the Golden Tigers. The senior pitched seven innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits while striking out eight.
In the second game, the Brenau offense got started quickly, scoring runs in each of the first four innings. Senior, Tiffany Schandera (Columbus, Ga.) went 1-2 with 2 RBIs, Katie Bolin (Danielsville, Ga.) went 1-3 with an RBI and Jenny Shepherd (Martinez, Ga.) went 2-3 with 2 RBIs. Madison Strickland (Gainesville, Ga.), Katie Cole (Tupelo, MS.) and Liz Schneider (Smyrna, Ga.) all added an RBI to the win.
Shepherd pitched five shutout innings, allowing only two hits while striking out 7 to take her 3rd win of the season.
The NAIA #12 ranked Golden Tigers, now 16-6 on the season (3-1 in conference), next play Friday at Faulkner University (Ala.). First pitch is at noon central time
