Golden Tigers Take 2 on Day Two
February 19, 2012
The Golden Tigers closed out the second day of the two day series with host LaGrange College with two wins and an overall record of 3-1 on the season. Following the first day jitters Brenau experienced in their season-opener and subsequent loss to the host team, Brenau was ready to play when the first pitch was thrown out at 9am yesterday.
Very quickly, it was apparent the offense had come to play as Brenau made short work of the host team. After 5 innings, the game was over and the score read 11-1 for Brenau. All-SSAC First Team Pitcher, Anna Maness, led the way for Brenau holding LaGrange to only one run for the game. Offensively, Kris Reynolds hit a home run to spark the derby and the Golden Tigers were celebrating their second win on the young season.
In the second game, things got very exciting and Brenau found itself down 5-0 and in unfamiliar territory heading into the 5th inning. Looking for something to spark the offense, the Golden Tigers found it in the form of All-SSAC First Team catcher, Morgan Smith. Smith calmly stepped up to the plate and delivered a 3-run homer at the most crucial point in the game. That spark was what the Tigers needed as they responded with gritty determination to keep the rally going and delivering two more runs to tie the score at 5 apiece. Heading into the 7th inning and looking for the go-ahead run, Brenau once again got it from Smith. This time she delivered a double to drive in 3 runs and get the score to 8-5 and seal the fate of the home team.
For the game, Brenau held a huge advantage statistically and several players in particular found their form. Senior, Brooke Bryant went 3 for 4 along with teammate Morgan Smith who collected 6 RBI's in the process. All-American, Jenny Shepherd went 2 for 3 at bat, collecting 1 RB1 as well as providing 5 strikeouts with her pitching responsibilities. Anna Maness came in to finish the game and collected 3 strikeouts in the process.
Next up for Brenau is a spring break trip to South Georgia on the 28th and 29th of February where they will play current SSAC opponent Brewton Parker College. During the same trip, the Golden Tigers will meet up with future SSAC team, Coastal Georgia College in Brunswick, GA.
