Brenau Earns #1 Seed at Gulf Coast

Gulf Shores, Al- After two days of pool play at the Gulf Coast Invitational Softball Tournament, the Brenau Golden Tigers will enter bracket play as the #1 seed by virtue of their 4-0 record and runs scored differential. On Saturday, the Tigers pitched a pair of shutouts, defeating #8 Martin Methodist 3-0 and coming back to beat LSU-Alexandria, 2-0. Freshman Anna Maness pitched both games, striking out 12 batters on the way to the impressive victories. In the Martin Methodist game, Brenau picked up five hits with Taylor Shrader leading the way with a 2-4 effort. Brooke Bryant went 1-2, Morgan Smith was 1-3 and Sarah Applegarth picked up the other hit in three appearances. Ellen Black was the big factor in the second win, going 3-3 with a homerun and an RBI. Lana Lazar went 1-3, Bryant was 2-3 and Smith and Maness each picked up a hit. The GSI is one of the premier softball tournaments in the country with 11 teams ranked in the Top 30 going in and the Tigers have established themselves as a team that can compete with the best teams at this level. They will face off on Sunday after a first round bye with the winner of the Faulkner/Shorter winner.
