Tigers Win Two at Gulf Coast Invitational

Gulf Shores, Al- The Brenau Golden Tigers softball team ran their season record to 16-1-1 with two wins on the opening day of the Gulf Coast Invitational, defeating William Woods, Mo (4-11), 3-0 and handing Central Methodist, Mo their first loss, 3-2 in 8 innings. The GCI is the most prestigious NAIA softball tournament in the country with 11 of the 27 teams ranked in the Top 30. The teams are divided into five pools for the first two days and each team will play the other teams in their pool. The teams will then be placed into a bracket for the final day.
Anna Maness pitched the William Woods game and delivered a six strikeout shutout in addition to picking up a hit in three at bats. Tiffany Schandera went 3-4 and drove in a run and Sarah Applegarth was 1-3 with two RBI's. Lana Lazar, Brooke Bryant and Morgan Smith all had a hit to support the cause.
Ellen Black struck out six in the nitecap and Maness came on in relief and got a strikeout. Lazar drove in two runs with a hit and Brooke Bryant, Schandera, and Jana Bryant each reached base on a hit. The game was tied 1-1 going into the eighth inning when the International Tie Breaker Rule was put into effect. Each team will place a runner at second base and try to drive in as many runs as they can from that point. Central Methodist drove in one in the top of the inning to make the score 2-1. Lazar drove in a run to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth and Smith delivered the winning run with a walk off single.
The SSAC is represented in the tournament by five teams, four of which are ranked with the Tigers at #29, Shorter at #12, Lee at #16 and AUM at #22. Faulkner is the other conference team in the field. The Tigers will take on Martin Methodist and LSU-Alexandria as pool play continues Saturday.
