Cheer and Dance Volunteer At Gainesville Charity Event
Members of the Brenau cheer and dance teams volunteered at the Gainesville Goes Gold Family Night to help raise proceeds to fight childhood cancer in downtown Gainesville last Thursday.
The first annual event, organized by Brenau alumnus Courtney Syfan Allgood, was in honor of Allgood's three year old daughter, Brecklynn, who was diagnosed with Pleuropulmonary Blastoma in November 2015 and other children that have been diagnosed with cancer in the Gainesville community.
The cheer team painted faces, took photos, sold t-shirts and collected money as over 500 people attended the event.
"Volunteering at the first Gainesville Goes Gold Event was amazing," said Cheer and Dance coach Krista Britt. "One of the many things I love about Gainesville is the sense of community we have here. We get behind a cause and come together to raise awareness."
"We have had several young children diagnosed with cancer in our community, so it pierces our hearts. To be involved in raising money for research and awareness was a privilege. I look forward to continuing to be a part of this event in the future."
Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunigan declared September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month at the event and announced that the Gainesville Goes Gold campaign will be continued each September going forward.
