Golf Places Fifth at Spring Break Invitational
In the first tournament of the spring season, the #23 Brenau golf team placed fifth at the Spring Break Invitational hosted by Lawrence Tech at the Grand National-Lakes Golf Course in Opelika, Alabama this past weekend.
The Golden Tigers shot a two-day team score of 340-341-681 and were paced by All-Tournament selection Niquole Mangal. The Sugar Hill, Ga. sophomore fired a strong 79-79-158 to finish in a tie for second place.
Fellow sophomore Ashley Omidi also had a solid performance shooting an 83-88-171 to place 17th. Macie Hurst earned 22nd place with a score of 91-84-175, while Sara Jane Bowers shot 87-90-177 to finish right behind her teammate in 23rd place. LaKese Brown rounded out the Golden Tigers scorers, placing 25th with a 97-90-187.
"Round one conditions were very difficult with cold and wind," said head coach Damon Stancil. "We didn't handle playing a big time course in tough conditions very well, but we didn't play our way out of the tournament either.
"Good weather made round two at Grand National a bit less daunting on Friday, but we just couldn't manage to get out of our own way long enough to post four good scores. Niquole (Mangal) really showed her mental toughness both days and posted two very strong 79's to earn a T-2nd finish and All-Tournament."
William Woods won the tournament with a team score of 635, while the University of the Cumberlands finished second with a 653. Host Lawrence Tech (663) and Faulkner University (665) rounded out the top four.
Brenau next hosts the Golden Tigers Invitational at Chattahoochee County Club on March 19th and 20th.
