The Brenau University volleyball team anxiously awaits their season opener against Reinhardt College, on August 30th, prepared to set a precedent for the upcoming season. The Golden Tigers have three newcomers to the squad, and seven returning. With that said, Brenau will prove to be a much more athletically inclined team, when compared to the program's past seasons.
After losing two senior middle blockers to graduation, freshman Rachel Adam (Athens, GA) and senior Alexis Arthur (Aikens, SC) will undoubtedly fulfill the roles that were left vacant. Adam and Arthur will complement each other well, Adam is known for her defensive threat while Arthur has proven to be a leader in the Golden Tigers' offense year after year.
Brenau will be returning both of their starting setters from last season, senior Kerry Abernathy (Celebration, FL) and junior Mekenna Cipres (Murietta, CA). Even though both players were involved in the execution of the Golden Tigers' offense in previous years, this will be the first season that either athlete has played a true 6-2 offense for Brenau.
Melissa Thornton (Woodstock, GA), a junior outside hitter, will be holding the coveted position for the third straight season. After Arthur moved to the middle, junior Danelle Russell (Cartersville, GA) eagerly stepped up, and completed the Golden Tigers' well-rounded, offensive line-up.
In a competitive environment, two individuals were still able to grasp the spotlight as defensive specialists, freshman Lindsay Kelly (Cumming, GA) and sophomore Tanisha Fields (Atlanta, GA). This team has proven to be much scrappier, defensively; athletes who were traditionally offensive players have been committed to strengthening their defensive skills, which now offers Brenau the assurance of a productive defense which can dramatically set the Golden Tigers' tempo.
