Tennis Season Outlook

The 6th ranked Tigers, once again, reached the quarter finals of the NAIA National Championships in Mobile, Alabama falling to the number 3 seed Point Loma Nazarene from California by a score of 5-1.
The score did not really reflect the closeness of the competition. Brenau's number 1 team of Lyn See Choo and Katarina Mazackova had a chance to go ahead at 7-7 but Mazackova netted a forehand to lose a break point opportunity. They went on to lose 9-7. In the match up of number 2's Jolene Wong and Liubov Orlova led in their match but let things slip away in the tiebreaker to lose 9-8. At number 3 doubles Eline Nagels and Hannah Thompson fought hard but lost 8-4. The doubles matches were the key to the Point Loma victory, as to recover from a 3-0 lead is extremely tough.
The singles matches were close with Jolene Wong picking up the win at the number 3 position. Lyn See Choo ran into tough competition in the highly ranked Strimple and fought hard but went down 6-3, 6-3. Both Hannah Thompson and Katarina Mazackova were making comebacks in their matches when Point Loma clinched the final point. Eline Nagels battled through a hamstring pull but after the injury was unable to move well around the court and succumbed to the steady play of Point Loma's Chiu.
Coach Leslie was very pleased with the team's effort in the championships and throughout the season. He felt that if the Tigers had been able to play a complete match in the 16's against Northwood (they defaulted 3 matches) it would have helped their preparation. As it was the team spent 4 days in Mobile before entering the competition.
Despite a difficult schedule with many matches against NCAA division 2 teams the Tigers finished the season with an overall 12-10 record (5-1 SSAC) and the runner-up spot to AUM in the SSAC.

Lyn See Choo was named Southern Region's Player to watch by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Lyn See Choo, Nelli Martirosyan, Liuba Orlova, Katarina Mazackova and Jolene Wong were named to the SSAC All Academic team. We were also named ITA All Academic team (above a 3.5).

We also received an award from Hall County Sports - Honorable Mention - team of the year, coach of the year and Lyn See Choo, Player of the year.
With only one player, Jolene Wong, graduating, the Tigers will continue to be able to field a strong team this fall. Coach Leslie will bring in one more player in January to further strengthen the team for the spring season.
