Thomas started the first softball team in school history at Brenau University in 2003-2004 and enters his ninth season as the head coach of the Golden Tigers. He has quickly transformed the Golden Tigers team into a conference contender. The Tigers received national recognition quickly by breaking in to the Top 30 National Rankings in NAIA, Division I in 2006, 2007, and 2008 (*only all-women's college ranked) and finished as SSAC regular season co-champions in 2009, qualifying for the NAIA National Championships as the #11 ranked team. Furthermore, in 2011, Thomas and the Golden Tigers received their highest national ranking ever when they were named as the #5 softbal team in the NAIA. While at Brenau, Thomas has coached 35 SSAC All-Conference Team Selections, 47 SSAC All-Academic Team Selections, 18 SSAC All-Conference Freshman Team Selections, 2 SSAC Players of the Year (2009, 2011), 3 SSAC Freshman of the Year (2009, 2010, 2011), 2 NAIA All-Region Selections, 2 NFCA All-Americans, and 4 NAIA All-Americans. In 2009, Thomas was named SSAC Coach of the year, and recorded his 200th collegiate win, in 2011, against LSU-Alexandria. After this milestone victory, he was inducted into the NFCA Easton Victory Club for 200+ wins.
Thomas coached high school softball for ten years at two different schools. His teams obtained an overall record of 209 wins and 82 losses (.718 winning percentage). During that time, his teams won 5 Region Championships and 2 Region Runner Ups; they made 1 Final Four State appearance, 3 State Final appearances and 7 State Sweet Sixteen appearances. During his tenure at each school, he set school records for wins.
He was voted Georgia Athletics Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1999, 2002 and 2004, coached the North-South All Star Game in 2000 and was also voted the North Georgia All Area Coach of the Year in 1999, 2002 and 2004. In 2008, Thomas was inducted into the NFCA Easton Victory Club (100+ wins).
