Gainesville, Ga-  Sophomore catcher Morgan Smith blasted two home runs today to help #25 Brenau upset #13 Shorter by scores of 10-1 (6) and 1-0.  The wins boosted the Tigers season mark to 23-6-1 and their SSAC record to 14-3-1, while the Hawks drop to 25-9 and 8-6.  Ellen Black also had a big night, hitting a walk off three run homer to end the first game in the bottom of the sixth and coming back to pitch her best game of the year, a three hitter with five strikeouts.
In the first game, the Tigers showed off their offensive power, collecting eight hits that included the homers by Smith and Black.  Sarah Applegarth went 2-4 from the plate and drove in three runs and TIffany Schandera had two RBI's with one hit.  Brooke Bryant was 2-4 and Lana Lazar collected a hit.  Freshman phenom Anna Maness pitched another solid game and had three strikeouts for the win.

Black then came on for the nightcap and completely shut the Hawks down, while Smith provided the only help she needed with her solo homerun.  Bryant, Schandera, Applegarth and Lazar each had a hit as the Tigers bounced back from their tough loss at Lee last Saturday to put themselves right back in the chase for the conference title.  "I am so proud of this team for coming back from the weekend the way they did and making a statement about where we belong," said Coach Devon Thomas.  "Ellen pitched a masterpiece in the second game and our defense was strong all night."

The Tigers will have a week to prepare for another important doubleheader with league-leading and #3 Lee next Tuesday at the Lanier Point Softball Complex.
