Gainesville, GA-
As we get excited about the beginning of our spring semester sports, I wanted to commemorate the superb accomplishments we had and are having with our fall and winter sports. Brenau University Athletics had a goal-breaking season with many of our sports and notable final rankings in the SSAC last fall. The Golden Tiger's volleyball team began the season on an eight game win streak en route to the best season in the history of the program. Along the way they broke many statistical records, had a player - Karen Green- named first team all-conference, received a 4th place conference finish and a 24-11 overall record. The cross country team had some great individual showings throughout the season and finished in a respectable 5th place at the NAIA qualifying meet. The soccer team played their most challenging schedule to date, beating several NAIA Top 25 teams, producing several all conference players and Brenau's all time scoring leader in Lily Futrell. The Golden Tigers spent the first half of the season ranked in the Receiving Votes category of the NAIA's Top 25 Soccer Coaches' Poll.
Currently, our winter sports are in full swing and demonstrating that they will be as successful as the fall sports. The swim team is gearing up for the NAIA National Swim Meet and has several swimmers performing at the top of their sport. Several records have been broken and the team has finished in first place at a couple of meets thus far this year. Our basketball team is laden with talented seniors- 4 of which have reached the 1,000 point mark in their careers as Golden Tigers this season! As a team, they are within striking distance of the top ranked team in the conference and look to be playing their best basketball to date!
Our spring sports will be competing within a matter of weeks. If the trend is any indication of things to come, it should be an exciting one for Golden Tiger fans. Our tennis team was successful in the off-season; finishing fifth in doubles at the ITA (International Tennis Association) National Championships and winning the Blue Gray Invitational Tournament last fall. The Golden Tigers softball team has been working hard in the off-season as they look to improve on the tremendous 2009 season they enjoyed. Both teams will once again vie for conference titles and a place at the NAIA National Tournament in May!
Academically, our student-athletes are once again excelling in the classroom. Our fall sports saw 10 athletes honored as academic all-conference performers while four were recognized at the national level by being named NAIA/Daktronics Scholar-Athletes.
I am exceptionally proud of each and every one of our athletes, their fierce competitiveness, quality sportsmanship, and exceptional motivation to be the best they can be both as athletes and students. We look forward to continuing this trend and breaking new records as we strive to move Brenau University to the top of the NAIA rankings!
