Cleveland, TN- The Brenau volleyball team (24-11) saw their record-breaking season end today in the semi-finals of the SSAC Championships when they were defeated by Lee University by scores of 14-25, 17-25 and 22-25. The Flames, who won the regular season championship, will advance to the championship game tomorrow with a berth in the NAIA National Championships at stake. The Tigers end a season that saw a complete turnaround in the history of volleyball at Brenau.
The 24 wins eclipses the old record for wins in a season of 11, established in 2006 and the five conference victories is the first time the team has won more than two games in a season. In today's match, the three seniors again led the way with Karen Green collecting nine kills and five digs, Audra VanArsdale with 17 assists and nine digs and Maida Smajic finishing with 15 digs. Freshman Melissa Thornton had seven kills and Meredith Hardin had four kills and three blocks. "It was a great ride and I can't say enough about the leadership of our seniors. They will be hard to replace, but I am very optimistic about the future of our program after the way we played in the third game today," said Coach Meredith Matthews.
